I wrote this article to show you how easy it is to get healthier without using any drugs and supplements. In fact, being healthy is the natural state of our body, the default from which we often derail. From that point, getting back to being healthy is sometimes a long and painful process. If you only took a few small steps, most illness and diseases could be prevented.
These are simple steps that anybody can take in order to improve their lives. Don’t delay it, start now! The body has many reserves which eventually get depleted. Being now in an apparently good state is not a guarantee for the future – unless you take good care of your body.
Step 1 – Say yes to breakfast
Even in a weight loss diet, eating breakfast is important because otherwise the body will starve in the first part of the day. Feeling threatened with hunger, the body will pack more fats for future use, which means putting on more weight. Likewise, the morning energy comes from breakfast and lasts until lunch.
Step 2 – No more sugar
In a word, sugar means fat, but this is only the bright side. The bad news is that sugar intake creates sugar spikes in the bloodstream. These spikes are regulated by a massive secretion of insulin. Over time, the cells become resistant to insulin, which leads to diabetes and other illness. Despite these hazards, if you like sugar that much, the least you can do is to reduce the quantity and find healthier substitutes such as agava syrup or stevia powder.
Step 3 – Daily salad
Vegetables provide so many benefits that here I can only point out a few. Green leafy vegetables contain cholophyll, which protects from cancer and other illness. Enzymes from vegetables help the body spend little energy to digest, so you’ll feel more energetic after a salad than after a cooked meal. Vegetables are packed with fibers, nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are the building blocks of the body.
Step 4 – Food combining is your friend
Foods are digested differently. To be properly processed, each food requires a precise environment in the stomach. When mixing incompatible foods, the body fails to process them correctly. In the best case, only a few of the nutrients are assimilated, with fewer benefits. Moreover, leftovers become toxic and create strain on the digestive system, especially on the colon, thus leading to various diseases. Check the food combining chart for a list of foods combination rules. It’s such a simple thing that makes so much difference!
Step 5 – No more fizzy, energy drinks and “natural” juices
They’re all packed with sugar and nasty chemicals. They don’t hydrate the body, nor provide any benefit. The so called “natural” juices are also full of sugar and preservatives. Even the most natural juices lose most of their active principles in as little as one hour. Also, natural juices are most likely squeezed from low quality fruits, as the premium quality ones go on sale. So, what’s the point in drinking them? There’s virtually no replacement for home made fresh juices (from fruits AND especially vegetables) which are instant energy boosters if consumed immediately after squeezing.
Step 6 – Meat and dairy products
Meat and dairy products are full of toxins and unnecessary elements. They don’t contain any enzymes so the body will work harder to digest them. Even worse, the antibiotics used on the animals are transferred to the final products. This is the commonly accepted cause for an increasing human antibiotic resistance. If you can’t live without meat and dairy products, at least reduce the consumption and eat more fish instead of other types of meat. All vegetables contain proteins, so reducing animal products from your diet will not affect the body’s protein reserve.
Step 7 – Processed and canned products
These are heavily processed foods, depleted of nutrients from overcooking, sterilization and conservation. In these foods the content of salt and additives is high. Their nutrition value is low, so removing processed foods completely from your diet is the best thing to do – and you have nothing to lose by doing so.
Step 8 – Baked goods
Nowadays, baked goods contain a great amount of preservatives and chemical compounds. Unfortunately, this also applies to most types of bread. The best alternative is to eat raw crackers made from various crushed seeds such as flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, sprouted grains and various vegetables. Replace regular bread with its wholegrain version. Pastry products are unnatural and nutritionally imbalanced foods, containing large quantities of unhealthy fats.
Step 9 – Drink a lot of water
Water is our best friend. Lack of hydration has an interesting yet dangerous side. If we fail to hydrate properly, the neuron receivers which send the thirst signal become inhibited. As a result, we don’t feel the thirst anymore, even if in reality there is a serious water shortage. The rule of thumb is to drink around 2 liters of water during the day. To be even more beneficial, the water should be made slightly alkaline by adding a few drops of lemon juice. The water should be at room temperature, not cold.
Step 10: Learn to think correctly
This is the hardest step, I know it from experience. While working with people, it was easy to explain to them the chemical processes taking place inside the body, but much more difficult to make them understand the power of their thoughts. The body is a delicate machine, whose systems are in a beautiful yet critical balance. Shifting the natural balance is extremely dangerous, with serious consequences. Constantly eating wrong foods is an example of shifting the body balance. The other main cause of imbalance is the way we think.
To make it extremely simple, we should always be happy with ourselves. Our inner thoughts need to be positive and in peace with ourselves. What is stress? Stress is simply a state where our inner thoughts don’t correspond with an external situation. This creates strain on the body which reacts and tries to defend itself. The brain doesn’t make any difference between an external, physical attack and an internal attack. One measure of protection is to build layers of fat, but on a long term, the results are much subtler than simply gaining weight.
This is why it is so important to control your thoughts about yourself and about what you’re eating. Even if you indulge yourself with a sweet while knowing it is not good for you, there’s no problem. Enjoy the moment, allow yourself to feel the flavor and then go back to eating healthy.
These 10 steps are the absolute basis for a healthy and happy life. If you start applying them today, you’ll notice better health and more energy. On a long term, the benefits are indeed impressive.
