What can sitting cause?
There is a whole array of problems that sitting can cause, and not all of them are harmless. First of all, people who sit a lot are at risk of gaining weight, especially in their middle. It is a proven fact that people who sit a lot have a broader waist than people who don’t. This gets even worse if you remember that people who get bulky in the middle have an increased chances of developing various heart conditions. To get things even worse, some of the most recent studies have shown that people who sit a lot can even develop some mental health disorders. A truly depressing overview and statistic in general.
Take breaks from sitting
Now before we start, in order not to get misinterpreted, we will admit to the fact that most people have no choice but to sit during most of the day. Still, it is not about the time alone, it is about whether you take breaks from sitting or not. Making breaks to simply stand up, even for as short a time as one minute can make a world of difference. Use every chance you have to stretch your legs a bit and you should be able to negate most of the troubles that sitting can cause.
Utilize your free time
As we have already said, because of your job you are probably forced to spend most of your hours in achair. Still, you can always utilize your free time to the fullest and try to do something with it. Go for long walks in your free time, or just take your (or any) dog out. On weekends go hiking or do some other walking related activity. In your area there must be at least one annual marathon. Enlist and don’t even think about not showing up. Preparing for this marathon alone will probably make all the difference necessary.
Modify your chores
Another thing you can do is to modify daily chores to your benefit. Walk on your grocery trips, try to be vigilant about your housekeeping and start cooking your own meals. Get yourself some cooking tips or lesions, get proper kitchenware and you will be ready to go. Cooking your own meals can mean the world to you because not only will you eat healthier, but also stand while preparing the food. This notion is on its own a definite worth.
Start doing your own yard work
Having a nice and presentable yard is quite important, this is why maintaining it yourself might be something that is worth your attention. Maintaining a garden is physically not an easy task, which is why it might be just the thing you need. This effort spans through an entire year and it is almost as beneficial for the look of your garden as it is for your own physique. It is for precisely this reason that the notion of making the garden of your dreams while achieving a great victory for your health at the same time is nearly impossible to top.
Introduce some changes to your commute
Most of your day is spent sitting, so sitting in a car while going to work is not something that your body needs. Try to introduce a radical revolution to your commute and start walking, riding a bike or using public transportation. The benefits of walking or riding a bike are more or less self-explanatory, but using public transportation is also great since it consists mostly of standing as well. If however, this is not something that you are willing to do, at least try parking a bit further from work. This way, you will at least walk part of the way.
In the end, even if you are forced to spend most of your day sitting, there is no reason why you should lead a sedentary lifestyle. Use every opportunity that you have to do something good for your body. Take as much stretching breaks as you can, get yourself a nice active hobby and change some ordinary habits, like the way you commute or the way you do your chores – for the better.
